As a St. Louis newborn photographer, one of the number one questions I get asked maybe “Is my home too dark for a newborn session?” My answer is “No!” After four years as an in-home photographer, and I have shot in every type of home. If you have one window, I can make it work. Trust me! I thought it would be fun to show you a little behind-the-scenes of a newborn photography session so you can see exactly what I mean. Check out the space we shot in…
Would you believe I shot the whole indoor portion of this session in this one spot? This session was shot on a beautiful, sunny summer morning. When I entered the home, I instantly noticed how dark it was. They had a large, stunning home, but I could only find light in this one area of the house. Luckily, I have clients who trust me when I say we can make it work..and we did!! Usually, my clients have at least one bedroom or the living room that gets good light, so this tiny spot was an extra challenge!
When I enter a home, the first thing I do is take a tour to check out the whole house. My families are prepped before our session on this. They know that I shoot in 100% natural light and choose my locations to shoot in based on the light vs. decor. You can have a Pinterest perfect bedroom, but I won’t shoot in it if it is as dark as a cave. Having trust that your photographer knows what will look best is key!!
During the winter season, I often have to move in-home sessions if it is too overcast. In these conditions, even the brightest house can be very dark! If you know going into your session you have a darker home, then expect to hang out near windows and doors. We can get very creative in a tight space. You would also be shocked where I have found light in some of the homes I’ve shot in. We always make it work! Even though I shot this entire newborn session at this one spot and outside on their front porch, we still got a ton of variety and beautiful images!
Do you have a dark home that you have been hesitant to shoot in? Let’s chat! I promise I can create beauty in almost any home! As a St. Louis newborn photographer, I now offer two options for my families. In 2020, I started offering sunset newborn sessions for those clients that would prefer outdoors for safety or preference. It is a beautiful option for anyone spring through the fall.
