In-home newborn photography, often called lifestyle newborn photography, has become quiet popular over the years. People fell in love with the emotion, light, and simplicity of in-home photography. There is something so timeless about capturing your baby in the place where you brought them home.
As an expectant mama looking for someone to capture those first days, you may feel overwhelmed. There is so much to take in when googling St. Louis Newborn Photographers! Things such as their shooting style, portfolio, and pricing, the list goes on and on. Not to forget, you want someone who has experience handling with newborns (Did I mention that I am a former Pediatric ICU and Pediatric/Neonatal Flight RN plus mama of 3? l’ve got you covered). As a photographer, I challenge you to ask your photographer about light. Light? Why Light you may ask? In my professional opinion, having a photographer who knows light maybe one of the most important points when choosing your St. Louis baby photographer.
Why ask about light? Light is essence of photography. It is the thing that may make an undesirable photo. As a client, you want a photographer that knows where to place YOU in YOUR home to get the most flattering, interesting, and beautiful light. For example when I enter a home, the first thing I do is turn off every light. My clients usually have done this already know this already after receiving their newborn session prep guide. Next, I open windows shades and explore the home for the best light. Where we shoot in your home is not based on the decor, the first focus is always on the light. I am also VERY honest with my families if they have rooms we can not use, such as a bedroom that is too dark. I want to give you the best images and that requires the best light possible.
If you’re booking with me, this doesn’t mean you need floor to ceiling windows! Most of the homes I work in in St. Louis are small and dark. It doesn’t bother me, I love moody low, light. I have spent more sessions than I can count cuddled up near a window in someone’s home or used a random room/hallway that had interesting and beautiful natural light. This is YOUR space. My job is to simply create beautiful images that represent your family in that space.
Check out a session that had that beautiful moody light that I love. Are you an expecting mama, let’s chat about shooting in-home or outdoors (blog post here) for your next newborn session!
