In-home newborn photography, often called lifestyle newborn photography, has become quiet popular over the years. People fell in love with the emotion, light, and simplicity of in-home photography. There is something so timeless about capturing your baby in the place where you brought them home. As an expectant mama looking for someone to capture those […]

When I first started my family photography business, I lacked confidence. I started it on kind of a whim, like most momtogs do. I loved shooting my kids so I figured why not jump into a business. Once I started booking families and had no idea what I was doing. Ha! So, I had tendency to let them take the lead. I would let clients choose locations, shooting times, and gave no direction on clothing or expectations. I bet you can guess how I would leave these sessions, sooo unhappy. I knew that I wasn’t producing the quality images I wanted to provide my families and what they truly deserved. I knew that I needed make some changes and could do so much better.

Motherhood is at the heart of my business. When I am shooting a family session , I find myself drawn to the mother-child bond. Sometimes it will be wild and crazy, other times delicate and quiet. Nonetheless, it is what my heart longs to capture. While shooting, I look for details or moments during the session that make me feel something.

If you have been following my work for a bit, then you know my love for capturing newborns in their homes. In-home newborn and family sessions will always have my heart. But during a global pandemic, like COVID-19, I want to provide all of my families the opportunity to capture their brand new baby even if they do not want to be indoors. I shot my first sunset newborn session shortly after St. Louis allowed photography to start again. I was honestly a little unsure of how this would go. Once I saw the gorgeous light we had for this session, I instantly knew this would be such an amazing option for so many families, especially families with toddlers.

One of the perks of being a family and newborn photographer is that I get to watch my families grow! Typically, most of my in-home newborn families,. return at 6-9 months for a milestone session and then for a 1 year family session. I can’t really explain how much I enjoy watching these babies grow. I often recommend your home for milestone and 1 year sessions. I truly believe there is something so timeless and emotional about photographing your baby throughout the year in the place that means the most to you and to them. Kids, especially babies, are SO much more comfortable in their own home.

Once a client books a lifestyle newborn session with me, one of the first question I often get asked is “When is the best time or age for our session?”. When you are choosing lifestyle newborn, you are getting the flexibility of timing. This means you are not stuck squeezing in your session during the first week or so of life, like in posed newborn sessions.

I was recently sitting down with friends talking about how we felt during our pregnancy, mainly the things we loved and hated. I was shocked at how differently each of my friends felt during pregnancy and even how much that varied pregnancy to pregnancy. I can totally attest to that after carrying 3 children!! Each of my pregnancies carried different stressors and different joys. The one thing I don’t have from all of my pregnancy is photos.
