As a lifestyle newborn photographer, one of the number one questions I get is “What if my newborn won’t go to sleep during our session?. My answer is usually something along the lines of “don’t worry, we let the baby lead the session”. When I started out as a newborn photographer, I spent so much time trying to get babies to sleep soundly or lay exactly where and how I wanted them. This process only lead to stress from the baby, me, and the parents. It felt SO unnatural to me as mother and photographer.

As a lifestyle newborn photographer, I often get asked by my clients how they should approach their sessions. Do they need props? What should their newborn wear? What should they wear? What about their home? When do you shoot lifestyle newborn sessions? For me, I really focus on keeping things simple and keeping my families as informed as possible.

2019 is coming to an end. Can you believe it? What a year it had been for me, both personally and professionally. We welcomed our third and final baby in October 2018. Our little guy is by far the family favorite around here. Ha! He brings so much joy and laughter to our lives, I can not imagine our family without him. That is not say there hasn’t been adjustment period because there totally has and still is!!! Life with 3 littles and a thriving business can be chaotic at times. I have learned that saying NO and setting boundaries is so important for my sanity.

Late summer in St. Louis maybe one of my favorite times for an outdoor family session. The temperatures are just right and that beautiful golden fall light is starting to make it’s appearance. I was so excited to shoot this family again! It was a session filled with so much laughter and joy but it didn’t start out that way. When I met up with this family, all 3 kids were crying!

Family photographers all have a different way of approaching a family session. Finding the one that suits your family is the most important. Study their portfolio and talk with them about their shooting style. I am not the photographer for every family and I am totally ok with that! There are all kinds of family photographers out there that range from traditional to documentary , with everything in between. I find myself somewhere in the middle, with a lean towards documentary vs. traditional.

I know I’ve said it before, but fresh 48s have my heart. They truly are some of my favorite sessions to shoot. There is something so unique about these sessions that you just can’t capture at any other point. There are emotions and an overall feeling that is palpable in the room, I hardly have to guide clients.

This family maternity session was the perfect way to officially kick off my spring season. This sweet mama was due with her third baby girl a few weeks following our session. How stunning does she look??? I know I didn’t look this good 2 weeks before my due date with my third baby.

Sharing a really fun in-home lifestyle session today! When Allison contacted me for an in-home family session, I was thrilled…and slightly nervous! She is a local, super talented photographer. I love love love photographing other photographers but I am usually a giant ball of nerves leading up to the session. Yet, this sweet family made me fell right at home and it felt like I was photogprahjng my own family.

When I open up new booking windows, my email subscribers are the first people I notify. Please subscribe if you'd like to be among the first to know when I begin scheduling 2026 sessions!
